Top 10 Teen Books

So what are the most popular books for teenagers? Will Sendlack, teen literacy coordinator and AmeriCorps volunteer at Burlington’s Fletcher Free Library compiled this list of the most circulated books by teenagers for the months of January and February, 2011.

1. “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. Published by Scholastic. 2008. This book, released a few years ago, continues to draw teens into the story of a young girls surviving a post-apocalyptic North America. It’s the first novel in a trilogy.

2. “Eclipse” by Stephanie Meyer. Published by Little, Brown. 2007. The third saga in the ever-popular “Twilight” saga follows the love triangle between Washington teen Bella Swan, immortal vampire Edward Cullen, and werewolf Jacob Black. The film adaptation was released last summer.

3. “Breaking Dawn” by Stephanie Meyer. Published by Little, Brown. 2008. The last book in the “Twilight” series sees Bella and Edward get married and have a child. The film version will be split into two parts and released in 2011 and 2012.

4. “City of Bones” by Cassandra Clare. Published by Margaret K. McElderry. 2007. Part of the “Mortal Instruments” series, “City of Bones” in the first book, which creates a fantasy world set in modern day New York City.

5. “City of Ashes” by Cassandra Clare. Published by Margaret K. McElderry. 2008. The second “Mortal Instruments” novel continues the fantasy world of witches, magicians and warlocks in New York City.

6. “Flawless: A Pretty Little Liars Book” by Sara Shephard. Published by HarperTeen. 2007. The second “Pretty Little Liars” book continues the story of four friends who continually receive mysterious text messages from an unknown individual who may or not be a former acquaintance.

7. “The Maze Runner” by James Dashner. Published by Delacorte Press. 2009. The first in a trilogy, the story follows Thomas who finds himself in a maze world known as the Glade.

8. “Uglies” by Scott Westerfield. Published by Simon Pulse. 2005. Another first novel in a trilogy, this story takes place in the future where all people are turned “beautiful”  through cosmetic surgery by the age of 16 until one teenager rebels.

9. “Pretty Little Liars” by Sara Shephard. Published by HarperTeen. 2006. The first in a 10-part book series, this begins the story of the four friends, who hold many secrets that may become exposed by an anonymous stranger.

10. “Brisingr” by Christopher Paolini. Published by Alfred A Knopf. 2008. The third book in the fantasy series “Inheritance Cycle” continues the story of dragon rider Eragon and his dragon Saphira.
